Out amongst the tall tree ferns and mountain ash of Wurundjeri Country, this hike is dedicated to the textures and detail of the forest: mosses. Guided by Daniel Ohlsen, we’ll spend time with these tiny plants too often overlooked, learning the basics of identification and uncovering the fascinating world of bryophytes.

Led by botanist and taxonomist, Daniel Ohlsen, together we’ll hike roughly 3km through the damp, lush forests outside Healesville, approx. 65km northeast of Naarm (Melbourne). Throughout this walk, we’ll learn about the ecological diversity and evolution of bryophytes (mosses, liverworts, and hornworts), their role in the ecosystem, common Australian species, and key characteristics for identification.
We’ll have morning refreshments upon arrival, and after our hike, you’re invited to stick around for an optional, BYO-picnic along the banks of Coranderrk Creek.
