BIRDING FUNDRAISER

At a time when many of us are feeling at a loss in the face of the H5N1 bird flu, this is an opportunity to come together over a shared love of Australia’s native birds. Led by Jonathan Tickner (the Merri Creek Wanderer), we’ll spend the morning admiring and learning about the birds of Naarm’s southwest.

This event is a fundraiser with 100% of proceeds being donated to BirdLife Australia and their efforts to protect native birds in the face of H5N1.

  • Join us to explore the Traditional Lands of the Yalukit-willam people in Hobsons Bay and learn about the birds that live there. Throughout this walk, you will be introduced to the practice of ethical birding and you will learn the fundamentals of bird identification by both sight and sound.

    Acknowledging the extreme threat native wildlife are facing with the spread of H5N1, this event is both a fundraiser for BirdLife Australia and an opportunity to come together over a shared love of birds.

    Please note that this birding walk will take place across two locations, Newport Lakes and Jawbone Marine Sanctuary. A light morning tea will be provided.

    100% of event proceeds will be donated to BirdLife Australia and their efforts to protect native birdlife.

  • Jonathan Tickner is a self-taught birder, bird photographer, and author. Having been drawn to birds and outdoor spaces throughout his life, Jonathan pursued this passion full time after retiring from more than 35 years as a teacher. With a background in philosophy, Jonathan brings a mindfulness to his practice of observing, studying and photographing birds. He has recently written and published multiple books, Birding Along the Merri Creek and Birding Along the Moonee Ponds Creek, both of which are excellent guides for those interested in birding around Melbourne (100% of all book proceeds are donated to the local Friends Of groups).
